Waxholmsbolaget orders the traffic — contractors sail the boats

This distinction matters when you are working out who to ask about what. Waxholmsbolaget describes itself as the beställare, the body that specifies and procures archipelago services on behalf of Region Stockholm, which is responsible for procured public transport across Stockholm County. The boats themselves are crewed and run by contracted shipping companies.

Five contractors sail for Waxholmsbolaget: Blidösundsbolaget, Madam Rederi, Ressel Rederi, Ingmarsö Sjötjänst and SvischAir. Two of them are worth knowing about specifically — Ressel Rederi handles Waxholmsbolaget's freight traffic, and SvischAir runs hovercraft services, which is how some islands stay connected when the ice is too thick for a hull and too thin to walk on.

One consequence shows up in the journey planner: vessels sometimes appear that are not on the official fleet list, because several private companies run scheduled services for Waxholmsbolaget using their own boats. Timetables and tickets are still Waxholmsbolaget's; the hull may not be.

A fleet with three working steamships in it

The published fleet runs to 21 vessels, and three of them are genuinely historic rather than decorative. S/S Storskär dates from 1908 and S/S Norrskär from 1910 — both still steam-powered, and Norrskär's dining saloon has been the draw since the boat was built. M/S Västan is the oldest vessel in the fleet; it began as a steamship and was re-engined in the 1950s.

The working fleet splits along a line that tells you what the crossing will feel like. The ice-going boats — Dalarö, Sandhamn and Söderarm as a series of three, the identical pair Gällnö and Nämdö, the identical pair Solöga and Vindöga, Waxholm I and Waxholm II year round, and Yxlan built for the northern archipelago — are the ones that keep going through winter. The fast boats are Roslagen and Skärgården, plus the six-strong "V-boat" series: Saxaren, Vaxö, Viberö, Vånö, Väddö and Värmdö.

Tickets, SL travelcards, and the paper ticket rule

You buy in the SL app or on board with a card. Whichever way you pay, make sure you are given a paper ticket and keep it — you hand it to the crew as you step off the boat. This catches visitors out regularly, because nothing about buying a mobile ticket suggests you will need a physical one at the other end.

A single ticket covers the whole Waxholmsbolaget network and is valid for 180 minutes. Adult fares run from 61 to 186 SEK depending on distance; the reduced category — pensioners, students and young people — runs from 39 to 114 SEK.

SL tickets work here too, but with a boundary. All SL tickets are valid between 44 jetties, covering Strömkajen to Vaxholm and the surrounding area, all year round. Outside that zone the picture changes with the season: in low season, SL tickets valid for 30 days or more are accepted across the whole archipelago, and Waxholmsbolaget dates the current low-season period from 14 September. Island residents without a road connection use the separate Ö-kort, and the Färdtjänst mobility card is accepted on the boats.

You cannot reserve a seat — and that is the intended design

There is no booking system. Waxholmsbolaget's own advice to visitors is to turn up at the jetty and board; normally there is room for everyone who wants to travel. The exceptions are predictable rather than random: Midsummer, summer weekends and unusually fine weather. On those days, arriving well ahead of departure is not just about getting a seat — it lets the operator see the crowd and call in extra services, which cannot happen if everyone reaches the jetty at the last minute.
