Ferry terminals

The ending of a terminal name is not decoration — it says what kind of berth you are going to, and therefore whether you can bring a car, whether you need a ticket, and whether you queue. These are the endings that appear across the 256 terminals here.

• Ferjekai129Norwegian car-ferry quay — part of the road, drive on, no ticket office.
• Hurtigbåtkai43Express-boat pier. Passengers only, no cars, and a ticket is required.
• No suffix37A plain place name — usually a small quay known simply by its village.
• Brygga / brygge25A jetty. Common in the archipelagos and on small island runs.
• Färjeläge11Swedish state road-ferry berth. Free of charge, cannot be booked.
• Kystrutekai4Coastal-route quay — where the long Bergen–Kirkenes liners call.
• Terminal4A larger building with indoor waiting, usually in a town.
• Havn / hamn2The harbour itself rather than a named ferry berth.
• Kombibåtkai1Combined boat quay: carries passengers and light freight.

One caution: the suffix describes the berth, not the whole place. A town can have a ferjekai for cars and a hurtigbåtkai for the express boat several hundred metres apart, and arriving at the wrong one is the most common way to miss a Norwegian ferry.

A quay's importance is not its passenger count — that figure is not published — but how many separate destinations it reaches. These eight are the network's junctions.
