Road ferries, not archipelago services

Färjerederiet describes its purpose in a single line: the ferry goes where the roads cannot reach. Its vessels are vägfärjor — road ferries — and that shapes everything about how they work. The routes span sea, rivers, fjords and lakes from Norrbotten in the north to Skåne in the south, in sparsely populated districts and in metropolitan areas alike, where a crossing solves a bottleneck or opens a shortcut that a road detour would not.

The operation is unusual in being vertically integrated. Alongside 40 ferry routes and 68 ferries, Färjerederiet runs its own maintenance yard, its own propeller workshop and its own training centre — a structure closer to a shipping company than to a procurement body.

The crossings are free — and you can summon the ferry

Two things set these apart from almost every other operator in this data. First, travel on most of the road ferries is free of charge: Färjerederiet states plainly on route pages such as Hönöleden, Gräsöleden and Ivöleden that resan med vägfärjan är avgiftsfri. Two are marked betalled and do charge — Visingsöleden (Gränna–Visingsö across Vättern, 6,200 m and about 30 minutes, where booking and tickets must be arranged before you drive aboard, through Jönköping municipality) and Ekeröleden (Slagsta/Fittja–Jungfrusund, 1,900 m and ten minutes, where a ticket must be registered to your vehicle no later than 30 minutes after boarding, with a separate ticket for a trailer). Second, the Trafikinfo Färjerederiet app does more than show timetables — you can call the ferry to your side directly from it, which is how the quieter crossings work outside fixed departures.

Every route has its own published timetable carrying weekend service, dangerous goods rules and route-specific notes, and each has its own page. Some are startlingly short:

  • Ivöleden — Barum to Ivön, on lake Ivösjön northwest of Bromölla in Skåne: 700 metres, about 7 minutes.
  • Gräsöleden — Öregrund to Gräsö in Uppland: 1,000 metres, five minutes.
  • Hönöleden — Lilla Varholmen to Hönö and Öckerö in the outer Bohuslän archipelago: 2,500 metres, 13 minutes.

Timetables are actively tuned rather than left alone. On Gräsöleden, after several seasons running two ferries in summer, Färjerederiet evaluated the pattern and adjusted it for 1 June to 31 August: fewer days with two ferries at the start and end of summer where demand was lower, more departures on the days both run, and a service break added for meals and machine care — aimed at the times when queues had formed.

The scale is in the calls, not the distances

These are short crossings repeated relentlessly. Färjerederiet makes around one million calls a year and carries vehicle traffic in the order of twelve million transports annually. Individually the journeys are minutes long; collectively they are a piece of the Swedish road network that happens to float.

The operation supports what Färjerederiet calls vital public services and necessary goods transport — the practical consequence of being the only link for communities in coastal districts.

Vision 45: climate neutral by 2045

Vision 45 is Färjerederiet's strategic plan, decided by the Director-General of the Swedish Transport Administration and updated regularly. It sets out how to secure future capacity while meeting the state's climate policy goals, which require climate neutrality by 2045 — meaning Sweden should have no net greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere by that year.

Beneath that sit four tactical goals: satisfied customers, balanced finances and results, a sustainable environment, and motivated employees.

Frequently asked questions

Do Swedish road ferries charge a fare?

Most do not — Färjerederiet states on route pages such as Hönöleden, Gräsöleden and Ivöleden that travel with the road ferry is free (avgiftsfri). Two are marked betalled and do charge: Visingsöleden, where tickets are booked in advance through Jönköping municipality, and Ekeröleden, where the ticket must be registered to your vehicle within 30 minutes of boarding.

Can I call the ferry if it is on the other side?

Yes. The Trafikinfo Färjerederiet app gives timetables and traffic information, and lets you call the ferry directly — which is how quieter crossings operate outside fixed departures.

How many ferries does Färjerederiet operate?

68 ferries across 40 ferry routes, reaching from Norrbotten to Skåne over sea, rivers, fjords and lakes. It also runs its own maintenance yard, propeller workshop and training centre.

How busy is the Swedish road ferry network?

Around one million calls a year, carrying vehicle traffic in the order of twelve million transports annually. The individual crossings are short — the scale comes from repetition.

What is a vägfärja?

A road ferry: a crossing that forms part of the road network rather than a separate transport service. Färjerederiet's own framing is that the ferry goes where the roads cannot reach, whether that solves a rural connection or a bottleneck in a city.

What is Vision 45?

Färjerederiet's strategic plan for securing future capacity while meeting Sweden's climate policy goal of climate neutrality by 2045 — no net greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere by that year. It is decided by the Director-General of the Swedish Transport Administration and updated regularly.

How short are the crossings?

Often only minutes. Ivöleden across lake Ivösjön in Skåne is 700 metres and about seven minutes; Gräsöleden between Öregrund and Gräsö is 1,000 metres and five minutes; Hönöleden from Lilla Varholmen out to Hönö and Öckerö is 2,500 metres and 13 minutes.
