Statens vegvesen: A national road ferry. Payment runs through the AutoPASS tariff regulation, administered on behalf of the Ministry of Transport — you pay for the vehicle and passengers travel free.
Norled AS: Norled runs 80 vessels under contract for transport authorities rather than on its own account, so fares and tickets follow whichever authority commissions the service. It is raising the share of low- and zero-emission vessels in its fleet from 4 percent in 2019 to 55 percent by 2030.

The hydrogen ferry
MF Hydra works this crossing, and it is the first ferry in the world to run commercially on liquid hydrogen. It entered service in March 2023 and had passed 20,000 crossings within eighteen months, carrying up to 295 passengers and 80 vehicles on the triangular Hjelmeland–Skipavik–Nesvik run.
The scale of that becomes clearer with one comparison: liquid hydrogen is used as a fuel by exactly two kinds of operator in the world — this ferry, and the space industry. The fuel arrives by road from Germany, trucked around 1,300 km and delivered every few weeks.
For a passenger nothing about boarding changes. It is worth knowing only because the tariff treats zero-emission vessels as their own category, and because a fjord crossing in Rogaland is currently the most ordinary place on earth to encounter a technology otherwise reserved for rocket launches.
