What makes this crossing different
Forty-five minutes, and why it stays that way
At 45 minutes this is one of the longest ferry legs on the E39, and long enough that the boats are built for it — cafeteria, seating decks, room to leave the car. Drivers on a Bergen–Stavanger run tend to treat it as the meal stop rather than something to endure.
The fixed crossing that would replace it, Hordfast, is a bigger undertaking than the tunnel further south. It runs roughly 55 km and takes out three ferry connections at once — Sandvikvåg–Halhjem, Jektevik–Hodnanes and Våge–Halhjem — using a bridge over the Langenuen strait and an end-anchored floating bridge about five kilometres long across the Bjørnafjorden. That floating span would be a world record, in open water, with clearance for shipping underneath.
It is not built. Until it is, the timetable on this page is the E39 through Hordaland, and the last departure of the day is a hard stop rather than an inconvenience.
