Boats through locks, not across water
What our route data records as short hops between places like Vrangfoss, Hogga, Ulefoss and Fjågesund are lock passages on a canal, not crossings. The passenger boats MS Henrik Ibsen and MS Victoria work the length of it, and the journey is the product — the locks are the attraction rather than an obstacle to get past.
Vrangfoss is the one to know: described as the crown jewel of the canal and one of Telemark's largest attractions, it is a flight of five lock chambers lifting boats through a single site.
Boat one way, bus the other

Published examples show both patterns. Dalen–Ulefoss–Dalen runs the boat both ways through the narrow canal sections. The Skien–Lunde–Skien half-day tour does it the other way round: canal bus out from Skien to Lunde, canal boat back. Tours can be joined from several stops along the canal.
Longer versions combine the boat with an overnight stay — one package pairs a lock cruise from Ulefoss to Dalen with a night at the Dalen Hotel.
If you bring your own boat
The canal is open to private craft, and the operator publishes what that requires separately: opening hours and prices for the locks, how locking through works, guest harbours and camping places.
