Municipal, which is rare enough to be worth checking
Norwegian ferry connections almost always sit with one of two bodies: the county transport authority, or Statens vegvesen where the road is national. Luster kommune holds this one, and Skyss — which covers everything else on this side of the country — records the fact rather than claiming the route. The boat and crew belong to Lustrabaatane AS, which has sailed the crossing since 2001 and started its current contract on 1 January 2025. Its ferry, MF Urnes, takes 11 cars and 90 people.
The practical consequence is about expectations. Fare schemes, discount cards and app coverage that apply across the county do not automatically extend to a crossing the county does not administer, so this is a route to check on its own terms rather than assume into a regional pattern.
Across the Lustrafjord to Urnes
The crossing links Solvorn on the western shore with Ornes opposite, on the arm of the Sognefjord that runs up toward Jostedalsbreen. It is short, and our timetable data shows a modest number of daily sailings rather than a frequent shuttle — a village connection, not a commuter route.
What draws visitors is on the hillside above the Ornes quay: Urnes stave church, the oldest of Norway's surviving stave churches. That gives this small ferry an unusual passenger mix — local traffic alongside day visitors who have come specifically to cross, walk up, and cross back.
Summer and winter are different services
Lustrabaatane publishes two timetables: summer from 2 May to 30 September and winter from 1 October to 30 April. The winter one is far sparser, and some of its departures run only if booked in advance — they are marked in the timetable. Tickets themselves are bought on board and cannot be bought ahead. In 2026 a single crossing cost NOK 75 for an adult and NOK 210 for a car; electric cars pay the ordinary fare here.
