A new boat lifted reliability above 99 percent
Wind is the constraint on this crossing, and the operator is unusually open about it. Cancellation notices on its own site record departures dropped for strong wind — a whole afternoon lost in one case, a morning window in another.
MF Forsand's arrival changed that picture: Høgsfjordferja reports that cancellations due to wind fell further after it arrived, and that reliability on the connection now runs above 99 percent. The other vessel on the route is m/f Svelviksund.
There is a small museum in the saloon
If you board MF Forsand for the first time, the operator's own suggestion is to go down to the saloon. A collection of antiques is displayed there from the period when MF Forsand — with its rotatable propellers — was one of Norway's most modern ferries.
It is a rare thing for a working ferry to curate its own history on board, and it puts the vessel's second career in context: the boat that once represented the cutting edge is now the one keeping a wind-exposed crossing running.
Watch for tunnel closures, not just weather
The connection's timetable responds to conditions on land as well as at sea. Høgsfjordferja has run extended timetables when the Høllesli tunnel was closed, absorbing traffic that would otherwise have gone by road. If you are planning a route through Ryfylke, the ferry's own operating notices are the place to check — they carry both the weather cancellations and the tunnel-driven extra sailings.
Autumn timetable and 2026 fares
The crossing is run by Fartøysdrift AS, a commercial company in Sandnes. The autumn timetable, valid 1 September to 31 October 2026, has a departure every 30 minutes from Oanes between 06:00 and 18:00 on weekdays and from 09:00 at weekends (Lauvvik 15 minutes later), with a gap around midday; an extra sailing runs at 18:30 if cars are left behind after the last departure. No timetable after 31 October had been published when we checked.
Fares are paid by card on board. A vehicle with up to five passengers costs NOK 150 under 4 metres and NOK 180 under 6 metres, rising to NOK 690 under 12 metres; a foot passenger pays NOK 50 and a bicycle NOK 75.
