Thirty-one ferries, fifty-three quays, and none of them owned by FRAM

Møre og Romsdal fylkeskommune carries responsibility for public transport in the county; FRAM plans and administers it. The transport itself is carried out by bus companies and shipping companies working on the county's behalf, and FRAM is explicit about where ownership sits — these companies own the buses, the express boats and the ferries.

The scale is worth stating plainly. At its peak FRAM has 31 ferries in service plus reserve vessels, calling at 53 ferry quays. Across bus, ferry and express boat there are 4,689 departures on an ordinary Friday in October, and around 18 million journeys a year. On the road side, four bus companies run about 380 buses with over 700 drivers between them.

One express boat route in the county is not FRAM's at all: line 800 between Kristiansund and Trondheim is operated by AtB in Trøndelag. FRAM has three express boat connections of its own.

Four big crossings on FRAM's timetable list are not FRAM's to run

FRAM's timetable list includes the big E39 and Rv 651 crossings — Molde–Vestnes, Halsa–Kanestraum, Solavågen–Festøya and Folkestad–Volda — but those four are riksvegferjer, part of the national road network and administered by Statens vegvesen rather than the county. FRAM publishes their timetables because they are part of getting around Møre og Romsdal, not because it runs them. Everything else in the list is a county-road connection.

For payment the distinction rarely bites, because both systems use the same rulebook: FRAM states that you pay by AutoPASS on all county-road ferries across the county, and the same AutoPASS tariff regulation governs the state crossings. The rule is the standard Norwegian one — you pay only for the vehicle, and passengers travel free — with the amount set by vehicle type and distance. A summer tariff applies across May, June, July and August.

Timetables carry a line number and a validity window — use both

FRAM publishes each ferry timetable as a numbered document with an explicit date range, and the same connection often has two current versions at once. Eidsdal–Linge (line 1054) runs on one timetable from 13 May to 27 September 2026 and another from 28 September onward; Hareid–Sulesund (1068) splits at 3 August; Stranda–Liabygda (1053) at 17 August; Molde–Sekken (1050) at 17 August. A few are event-specific — Larsnes–Åram–Voksa–Kvamsøya (1066) has a dedicated timetable for the Kong Arthur play on 8 and 9 August 2026.

FRAM's own advice is to use the journey planner rather than the PDFs, because that is where deviations and public-holiday changes show up.
