A lake big enough to be called an inland sea
Femunden covers 203 square kilometres and runs 60 kilometres end to end, making it Norway's second-largest natural lake. The local name for it — innlandshavet, the inland sea — is not much of an exaggeration at that size.
M/S Fæmund II has worked it every season since it was completed in 1905, carrying up to 100 passengers along the shore of Femundsmarka.
A short season, and a bus to meet the boat
The 2026 timetable ran from 13 June to 6 September. Until 9 August the boat sailed Synnervika–Elgå every day except Saturday, and from late June a longer Saturday route ran on to Buvika; from mid-August it ran Friday to Sunday only. The 2026 season is over, and the 2027 dates had not been published when we checked.
There is car parking at Synnervika, and for anyone without a car AtB bus 540 runs from Røros to meet the boat — but only during the sailing season.
The round trip makes many stops, and the operator points out the practical consequence: you can get off, take a walk, and pick the boat up again on its return leg. That turns a single daily sailing into a usable way of reaching trailheads rather than just a sightseeing loop.
A 2026 day ticket for the Synnervika–Elgå round trip cost NOK 499 (NOK 599 with the extension to Buvika); children under 5 travel free and under-15s pay half. On board there is a kiosk serving local dishes alongside waffles, coffee, soft drinks and beer.
What the stops are for
Femundsmarka is the reason most passengers are aboard: canoeing on still water, walking through sparse pine forest and high country, and fishing in the many watercourses. Some visitors take short trips from the stops; others stay in the area for long stretches. Reindeer range across the same ground.
