Five shipping companies, one stretch of coast each
AtB names its operators openly, which makes it possible to say who will actually be crewing your crossing:
- Torghatten — formerly FosenNamsos Sjø — covers the widest span, from Kristiansund in the south to Leka in the north, running both express boats and car ferries. Its head office is in Trondheim and it has been an AtB partner for years.
- Norled took over the Trondheimsfjord route area in 2024.
- Fjord1 runs Brekstad–Valset with two electric ferries drawing over 90 percent of their power electrically. It is the largest operator in the Norwegian ferry industry and works in six counties.
- Fosenlinjen has three ferry connections at the outer end of the Trondheimsfjord, carrying over 90,000 passengers a year between the islands in Ørland municipality (2022 figure), and has been an AtB operator since 2015.
- Vidar Hop Skyssbåter carries passengers in Ytre Namdal and Osen, and has worked with AtB since 2020.
A carbon-composite catamaran with room for 45 bicycles
MS Namdalingen entered service for Vidar Hop Skyssbåter in 2024. It is a carbon-composite catamaran seating 97 passengers — and it carries storage for 45 bicycles, which is an unusually high ratio for a boat that size and tells you what kind of travel the Namdalen coast expects. Vidar Hop's work is not limited to scheduled routes; the company also runs ambulance boat services, charter and excursion trips.
What AtB does and does not do
AtB describes its job as the everyday jigsaw — half a million people in Trøndelag moving back and forth across city, countryside, mountain, land, coast and water, with the emphasis on many small journeys rather than a few large ones. AtB writes the contracts and the timetables; the hulls and the crews belong to the companies that win them.
The reach extends beyond Trøndelag in one direction worth knowing about: AtB contracts the express boat that starts in Kristiansund, a town inside Møre og Romsdal where FRAM otherwise runs public transport.
